How can someone on the inside feel like such an outsider? 

The stadium buzzed with excitement. There was a football game our team was likely to win, but the game wasn’t the buzzing highlight of the evening. This special night featured a nod to high school seniors and their parents before the ready-to-conquer-the-world young men demonstrated their prowess on either side of the 50-yard line. 

My stepson, a lover of the limelight, would be introduced with fanfare regarding his high school accomplishments and graduation plans as he was escorted onto the field by his parents. 

I’d experienced senior night a few years ago with my daughters – a momma who understood the importance of the moment – a significant life marker- for both my child and me. My influence would dim even as I celebrated my child’s transition to adulthood. Senior night, a night when freight trains of memories with your kids growing up speed through your mind, the imprint of transition can feel overwhelming.
