What do you think of when I say, “Diet Dr. Pepper”? Hold that thought.

Welcome to Stepfamily Mission POSSIBLE! YOU ARE FAMILY HERE!
In today’s episode Bill and I interviewed a Couples Financial Coach, Adam Kol.

When I was growing up my dad was gone often enough – he worked for the railroad to feed 6 kids. I’m not quite the baby, I’m actually second youngest.  As I reflected on my money experiences, I recalled how the money culture in our home shifted several times as the family dynamics changed.  My mom re-entered the workforce after I went to kindergarten – or maybe it was after my baby sister, Kat, started school. Up until then, my mom stayed home with all of the kids.  I’m not sure who had the more challenging vocation – but I think it’s a close race between the two of them.

Dad earned the dollars and mom managed the home. Mom was a deal-finder. Each week, when the adds came out, she’d compare her list with the sales at the stores and off we’d go to at least 3 or more grocery stores to get the goods.  Remember the diet dr. pepper?  That was always on sale at the Piggly Wiggly – what an odd name for a grocers!

Early on I didn’t have an appreciation for amount of money exchanged for groceries, but as I grew up, I’d see the wad of twenties my dad gave my mom before it was time to shop.  My eyeballs were pretty big!  Now, my eyeballs getting big when I see the price tags on the goods in the aisles.

Which brings me to the topic of this week’s episode – it’s all about the money, honey. In more difficult conversations, it’s easy to get caught up in what we expect the other person to say – so much so, that we might actually miss what they did say. Adam’s advice is to approach more difficult conversations with a sense of curiosity.  When Adam put a pin in the conversation that triggered him, and let the ideas marinate, he gained an aha moment.

What about you? Do you agree with Adam’s approach to be curious?

We invite you to learn more about your couple's money personality type by taking the quiz on Adam's website. You can also find Adam's podcast here.
